Amanda Popovich 13, of Carnegie, will be living at Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA. this summer. She is the daughter of Mark and Chris Popovich and sister to Alex. Amanda attends Carlynton Junior-Senior High School where she is a 7th grade class representative, cheerleader and a high honor roll student. Amanda’s favorite subject is science, however she has many interests including soft ball and soccer, Amanda plays the flute and studied piano for 6 years at Pittsburgh Music Academy.
In October 2008 Amanda became one of the first students to begin her dance training with me and promptly announced that she was going to be a ballerina someday. Since then Amanda has been determined to make her dream come true. She trains at The Conservatory in all disciplines of dance with a concentration in Classical Ballet and Pointe. She studies for 10 hours per week but when she is preparing for productions her rehearsal schedule can add another 15 hours of dance to her week. Amanda is the youngest member of The Conservatory’s Performance Ensemble. Last season she was promoted to Soloist with the Ensemble and has danced leading roles in the school’s original productions. She has danced several variations including Mirliton and Spanish from the Nutcracker. This Christmas she performed for the first time en Pointe. The Conservatory offers Master Classes with Pittsburgh Ballet Theater’s former Principle Dancer Erin Halloran. Amanda believes that these classes have helped her prepare for a challenging audition season.
In January Amanda began her journey. For the first time, she auditioned for acceptance into 4 Summer Intensive Programs. Boston Ballet’s Summer Intensive Program was first and held at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater studios. The next auditions were for American Ballet Theater, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and the last was for Joffrey Ballet. Amanda’s training and determination was noticed by all judges and she was accepted into all 4 Programs. She has chosen to attend Boston Ballet’s 6 week program. Amanda was chosen from more than 2,400 students who auditioned for Boston’s Program during a 33 city audition tour that traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Amanda will train 5-6 hours a day. Her classes will include Technique, Pointe, Variations, Partnering, Modern and Conditioning all culminating in a performance at the end of the Intensive to showcase her strength and growth. The quality of dancers and the concentration in Classical Ballet that this program offers, as well as training away from Pittsburgh to gain new experiences, is what Amanda considered when making her decision.
Since Amanda has attended every Summer Intensive at Mansfield Conservatory West, she will be missed by all of her classmates and friends this year but all at the Conservatory are very proud of her and happy to send her off on her journey to someday become a Principle Dancer with a major Ballet Company…..
